We say An old C-Class cast-off that made for a passable, small coupe but was a long way off the pace.Performance There are four petrol engines and two diesel units available with the CLC. The range starts with a lively 1.8-litre Kompressor which comes with two power outputs, 140bhp and 181bhp. You can also get a 2.1-litre CDI diesel with 120bhp or 147bhp. The range-topping 350 model uses a 268bhp petrol engine paired with an automatic transmission. This set-up moves the CLS from 0-62mph in just 6.3 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph.Emissions Diesel engines are impressively efficient, with some 200 CDI models managing 50mpg whilst emitting just 147g/km in CO2. Petrol engines are obviously less frugal but most are not too bad for their class. The 350 specification is the weakest in this area; it manages 28mpg and emits 239g/km.Driving The drive is enjoyable and handling is responsive, the sport trim models particular excel in this regard providing extra agility and precision.Feel While it can be fun to drive, the steering on the CLC lacks the feedback drivers may crave. The automatic gearbox meanwhile changes smoothly but saps a little of the power.Space The cabin is very comfortable for front passengers, who get more than enough legroom. Adults sitting in the back may find it cramped though, while storage spaces can’t hold much. The boot capacity is a reasonable 320 litres in size.Equipment There are just two trims, the standard SE and Sport. From standard you get plenty of equipment including various luxuries, like alloy wheels, cruise control and an electric sunroof.Price Pricing for a new model ranges from £19,780 to £28,320.Quality The CLC is generally pleasant to be in with comfortable seats and an uncomplicated centre console. Components should be sturdily built and reliable. One downside is the noise of the diesel engine can be intrusive, particularly when it’s cold or put under hard acceleration.Safety Standard safety equipment includes electronic stability, six airbags and acceleration skid control.Pros Looks sleek, perky engine range, interior is comfortable, well equipped.Cons Rear visibility is restricted, steering lacks feedback, diesel engines are noisy, seating is cramped in the back for adults.Alternatives Audi A3, BMW 1 Series Coupe
