We say The MG6 saloon improves somewhat on the hatch, but is still a long way off the best.Performance At the moment the MG6 has just one engine available, a 1.8-litre petrol unit with 158bhp connected to a five-speed manual transmission. It does 0-60mph in 8.4 seconds and hits a limited to speed of 120mph. It’s nothing spectacular but in-gear flexibilityEmissions The petrol engine has a recorded fuel economy of 35mpg, while CO2 emissions are at 184g/km. These figures aren’t at all impressive but a 2.0-litre diesel engine is due to join the MG6 line-up in 2012 which should perform more favourably.Driving While the MG6 is heavy and lacks pace, it does offer a lot of grip and plenty of body control.Feel The ride is firm but acceptable; the steering however lacks feedback particularly when going through low-speed corners while the clutch is disappointingly vague.Space Very roomy inside, the MG6 can easily fit adults in the front and rear seats without trouble. The boot meanwhile is not only well shaped, but offers 472 litres of space, not the biggest on the market but decent nevertheless.Equipment As standard you get features like air conditioning, alloy wheels and four electric windows. The middle and top-specification trims add luxuries including cruise control, Bluetooth and rear parking sensors.Price Pricing starts at £15,995 for the entry-level S trim. The middle SE trim is £17,495 and the top TSE model costs £19,995.Quality The materials used in the MG6 look and feel tacky, while the seats are disappointing for a self-confessed driver’s car. Engine, road and wind noise all intrude noticeably into the cabin as well.Safety The MG6 received a four-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash safety test. There are numerous safety features onboard like electronic stability and front and side airbags.Pros The MG6 is spacious, grips the road well and offers some decent onboard equipment. Starting price is cheap to.Cons The interior is dire; the engine lacks refinement and efficiency which in turn means high running costs as well. The current absence of a diesel engine is also disappointing.Alternatives Mazda6, Ford Mondeo, Skoda Superb
