They offer excellent performance figures without sacrificing decent fuel economy figures and CO2 emissions – the best of both worlds, if you like.Emissions Volkswagen has applied its BlueMotion engine technology to a 1.9-litre TDI diesel unit in the Touran’s range. It returns more than 50mpg and emits 144g/km in CO2 on a combined cycle which is excellent for such a large MPV. Other diesels are also good in terms of economy and emissions.
Driving The Touran is quite a surprise to drive for a large MPV because it favours a firm suspension set-up which means it handles really well and only has limited bodyroll around corners.Feel The Touran is an excellent cruiser despite its firm suspension set-up which never becomes uncomfortable. Engine noise is a problem on the smaller petrol units but the diesels do not need to be worked quite so hard and are quieter as a result.Space The Touran seats seven or five with a 700-litre boot. With the third row there's still a reasonable boot but with the rear seats folded flat there’s class leading load space.Equipment Electric windows, CD player, aircon and cruise control are standard. Auto box option on better engines.Price The Touran returns decent fuel economy figures courtesy of its strong diesel line-up and residuals are also good.
Prices start from a very competitive £14,000 and rise to just £25,000.Quality The overall impression of the Touran, both inside and out, is solid and durable, if rather boring. The interior is robust and features decent materials and surfaces but it’s still quite drab and dreary. There’s an impressive range of petrol and diesel engines under the bonnet as well which mix torque and fuel economy brilliantly.Cons Unfortunately the Touran is a dull car.
