Best convertibles to get you summer-ready

Thinking of the warmer summer months? Here are the drop-tops that should be on your shortlist.

With the summer months on the way, warmer weather should be just around the corner. And if you want to make the most of the summer season while staying in the UK, getting behind the wheel of a convertible is a great option.

Letting you enjoy the open-air experience, many convertibles offer great all-year-round usability too, meaning they don’t have to be cooped up for the rest of the year. These are the best convertibles for all budgets.

Mini Convertible

The Mini Convertible is the UK’s most popular drop-top. That’s for a good reason, too, as it combines all the attributes that make the standard car such a hit with drivers but blends it with the extra fun that comes from an electric folding canvas roof.

Available with a choice of peppy petrol engines offering up to 228bhp, the Mini Convertible is a fun, stylish and high-quality convertible that also doesn’t cost as much as you might expect, with prices starting from just £22,105.

Fiat 500e Convertible

Electric cars come in all shapes and sizes, but so far there have been very few that are available as a convertible. One exception to the rule is the electric Fiat 500.

Bringing the same well-loved styling that has made the 500 such a hit with buyers, this new EV sits on a completely different setup to the standard petrol car, allowing for a range of technology and safety enhancements. Offering a range of up to 199 miles, there’s plenty going for this drop-top Fiat.

Porsche certainly knows how to make a great sports car, and one of its top hits is the Boxster. Offering one of the best driving experiences of any convertible, the Boxster is available with a great selection of engines, from four accessible four-cylinder units through to more powerful GTS and Spyder versions.

The Boxster also offers strong desirability, while its interior is particularly well-finished, earning that premium status and helping to justify this Porsche’s steeper price.

Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet

Convertibles come in all shapes and sizes, and just because you want a drop-top, it doesn’t mean you have to go with something sporty – as the Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet proves. Based on the brand’s best-selling crossover, this model offers smart styling and easy drivability.

At the same time, the T-Roc Cabriolet is one of the more practical convertibles on sale, with room for four adults inside, and a boot that will be large enough for day-to-day use. The T-Roc is also comfortable, and decent value for money as well.

Mazda MX-5

The Mazda MX-5 is the most popular two-seat convertible ever, and there’s a good reason for that as it’s a very affordable way of getting behind the wheel of a new sports car. Though not the most powerful, the MX-5 still offers decent performance that can be enjoyed safely without having to break the speed limit.

All MX-5s also come with plenty of standard equipment, while a £24,755 starting price and affordable monthly payments mean this Mazda could be a great everyday runabout. Relatively small engines and the MX-5’s light weight also mean it will be cheaper to run than you might expect.

If you want a slice of Americana, it doesn’t get much better than the Ford Mustang Convertible. Packing a large 454bhp 5.0-litre V8 engine under its bonnet, this muscle car offers plenty of performance, while also being accompanied by a great soundtrack.

It also looks like nothing else on the road, and will really appeal if you’re looking for something different – particularly in Convertible form, which is quite rare in the UK. Packing plenty of standard equipment, you get plenty of car and performance for your money.
