Buyer’s guide to the BMW 8 series

Buyer’s guide to the BMW 8 series

If you're looking at the new BMW 8 Series and can see yourself behind the wheel, here's what you need to know before you enquire about the new coupe.

After the original model was retired back in 2002, BMW is bringing the 8 Series name back to its line-up – with the stylish coupe being revealed earlier this year.

As the new flagship model, the 8 Series comes with the latest technology BMW has to offer and with other body types on the way, this is the start of a new range of premium sporty vehicles.

Here is a brief look at what to expect from the 8 Series…

What engines can you choose from?

Customers will have the choice of two engines – both of which are paired to an eight-speed automatic sport transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive. The M850i petrol option is the pick of the range, as it uses a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 that develops 523bhp and 750Nm of torque to get the 8 Series from 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds. It has a limited top speed of 155mph.

What is likely to be the most popular option is the 840d, which employs a six-cylinder tin-turbocharged diesel engine that comes with multi-stage turbocharging for even power distribution

through the rev-range. It is also the more efficient of the two – capable of achieving close to 48mpg.

What equipment will be on offer?

At the centre of the 8 Series cabin is the 10.25-inch control display, which uses BMW’s latest operating system and can be controlled by buttons on the steering wheel, gesture control, the iDrive controller, voice control or the touchscreen itself. With the new software, people can use the ‘Hey, BMW’ command to activate the artificial intelligence personal assistant and use the infotainment functions.

Customers of the 840d model will be allowed to spec the M Sport and M Technic Sport packs – which come as standard on the M850i. The M Sport pack includes a leather M steering wheel, 19-inch M alloys, M Sport brakes and illuminated door sills – while the Technic alternative adds 20-inch alloys with performance tyres, an uprated braking system, an electronic differential lock, rear spoiler and high-gloss trim.

Multiple safety systems are also on board as part of the Driving Assistant Professional and Parking Assistant packs.

How much customisation is there?

Although the official range of personalisation features are yet to be revealed by BMW, but what is guaranteed is that the 8 Series will be part of BMW’s Individual programme – which allows customers to give their own model a unique edge. Interior and exterior trim options will be available for customers to choose from.

What will it cost?

Prices for the 8 Series start from £76,270, which gets you the 840d model. If you want the current performance option – the 850i – you’ll have to fork out £99,525, but that does get you the flagship BMW, all the features and a truly exciting driving experience.
