Buyer’s guide to the Ford Transit Custom

Ford’s mid-size van remains an excellent all-rounder

Ford continues to dominate the van market, with its line-up of commercial vehicles all proving particularly popular. 

None more so than the mid-size Transit Custom, however, which is by far the best-selling van in the UK, with more than 20,000 examples registered in the first five months of 2022 – making it more popular than any car too. 

It’s very practical, is great to drive and is available with all the bells and whistles. The line-up is rather extensive, though, so here’s a quick overview of the range to help you decide on the right vehicle. 

What engines are available?

Diesel engines continue to dominate in the van market, and all of the Transit Custom’s powertrains are based around this. 

It’s a 2.0-litre turbocharged EcoBlue diesel engine, which is available with outputs of 104bhp, 128bhp and 168bhp, with the latter two options also available with an auxiliary electric motor and 48-volt battery to improve fuel economy and help with acceleration. All mild-hybrid versions use a six-speed manual gearbox; only the non-electrified options get a choice of a six-speed automatic transmission.

What trim levels are offered?

Six trim levels are available on the Ford Transit Custom, with equipment highlights and pricing as follows. 

Leader – from £29,040 (excluding VAT)

Kicking off the Transit Custom line-up is the Leader. Standard equipment includes remote locking, auto-door locking, an electric driver’s window and reach and rake adjustment for the steering wheel. You also get a trip computer, dual-purpose passenger seat and black plastic bumpers. 

Trend – from £32,525 (excluding VAT)

Upgrade to the Trend and it brings more useful features like electric folding mirrors, front fog lights and automatic lights and wipers. You also get air conditioning, footwell lights, a heated windscreen, front and rear parking sensors, wheel covers and a leather steering wheel. 

Trail – from £36,440 (excluding VAT)

In addition to the Trend, the more rugged-focused Trail gets 16-inch alloy wheels, a mechanical limited slip differential for extra grip and a chunky styling kit including a bold ‘FORD’ grille and additional plastic cladding.

Limited – from £35,255 (excluding VAT)

The high-spec Limited model builds on the Trend with its body-coloured exterior (there are no dark plastic bumpers here), along with additional chrome styling, heated front seats, 16-inch alloy wheels and a digital rear view mirror. 

Active – from £37,330 (excluding VAT)

In addition to the Limited, the Active comes with a colour-coded grille, underbody protection and extended length running boards. 

Sport – from £39,245 (excluding VAT)

At the top of the range is the Sport, which gets a more aggressive look thanks to sporty alloy wheels, exterior styling pack and bonnet stripe. It also features upgraded seats and lane departure warning. 

What about personalisation?

Choice is key to the Transit Custom, with three bodystyles available – a regular panel van, a crew cab and a Kombi model with full rear windows and seats in the back. There are two roof heights on offer too, along with two different lengths and a range of different GVMs

There’s a healthy choice of colours on offer, with 10 different shades on offer, including bright options like Orange Glow, Race Red and Blue Metallic. The options list is also vast, ranging from power features to power equipment, to a host of different seating configurations. More conventional optional extras are available too, such as adaptive cruise control and a reversing camera.
