Buyer’s guide to the MG5 EV

Buyer’s guide to the MG5 EV

Looking at an affordable electric car? The MG5 could be the car for you, and here’s what you need to know

There are two key criticisms often labelled at electric cars – they’re too expensive and the range is too short.

But step forward MG with its new ‘5’ estate car as counter argument to both of these things – having one of the lowest prices of any new EV and also a great real-world electric range.

The recently-introduced MG5 is also the UK’s only estate car on the market today – impressing with its spaciousness and also its seven-year warranty, which is one of the longest of any EV.

So if this all sounds appealing, here’s what you need to know about the MG5 in our buyer’s guide…

What powertrains are available?

Just a single powertrain is available with the MG5, and it’s surprisingly one that’s different to MG’s other electric car, the ZS EV.

Combining a 115kW electric motor with a 52.5kWh battery, the MG5 produces 154bhp and 260Nm of torque – allowing for a speedy 0-60mph time of 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 115mph.

In terms of range, MG claims it can travel for a combined 214 miles on electricity (working out as 3.6 miles per kWh) though this could go up to as much as 276 miles (4.9 miles per kWh) if it’s just used around the city. It’s also equipped with 50kW rapid charging capability, meaning the battery can be charged from flat to fully charged in as little as 40 minutes.

What trim levels are offered?

Two grades are available on the MG5 – Excite and Exclusive. Equipment highlights and pricing are as follows.

Excite – from £24,495*

Standard equipment is generous and includes an eight-inch touchscreen with DAB radio, satellite navigation, Bluetooth and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. You also get a reversing camera, cruise control, air conditioning and a seven-inch digital driver display.

Exclusive – from £26,995*

Upgrade to Exclusive models to get upmarket touches such as  keyless entry and start, leather upholstery, heated front seats and an electric driver’s seat with adjustable lumbar support. It also features an auto-dimming rear view mirror, automatic climate control and silver roof rails.

*Prices include the £3,000 government electric car grant

What about personalisation?

Personalisation isn’t one of the MG5’s strongest points, though buyers are able to choose from five colours – Arctic White, Black Pearl, Picadilly Blue, Westminster Silver and Dynamic Red.

A range of accessories are also on offer, including mudflaps, boot liners, side scuttles and roof racks, depending on your needs.
