Buyer’s guide to the Skoda Fabia (1)

Skoda’s Fabia is one of the most well-rounded small cars on sale

The small car segment remains as competitive as ever, with these value-packed models continuing to improve.

They offer more of a ‘big car’ feel than ever, and the latest generation of Skoda Fabia is a prime example of this. It’s particularly spacious inside – offering levels of room more comparable with models from the class above – while it’s also smarter to look at than ever and comfortable too.

Let’s take a look at what you need to know about the latest Skoda Fabia before buying one.

What engines are available?

No electrification is available yet with the Fabia, with the model instead offered with a wide range of petrol engines.

Kicking off the line-up is a naturally-aspirated 1.0-litre unit, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. With only 79bhp on offer, it’s certainly not quick with its 15.3-second 0-60mph time, and it’s only really suitable for new drivers as a result.

Our preference would be one of the turbocharged 1.0 TSI petrol engines. There’s a choice of 94bhp and 108bhp versions, with 0-60mph taking 10.4 and 9.6 seconds respectively. The 94bhp engine comes with a five-speed manual transmission and is the most efficient Fabia in the line-up – returning a claimed 56mpg, with C2 emissions of 115g/km. The 108bhp version gains a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed DSG automatic.

At the top of the line-up is a 148bhp 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol unit, which is exclusive to the Monte Carlo trim. It can hit 60mph in 7.8 seconds, though it can still manage close to 50mpg.

What trim levels are offered?

Skoda offers four trim levels on the Fabia, with equipment highlights and pricing as follows.

SE Comfort – from £17,990

All Fabias get a decent level of equipment, with the SE Comfort coming with 15-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, rear parking sensors, leather steering wheel and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with DAB radio and Bluetooth.

Colour Edition – from £18,445

The Colour Edition builds on the SE Comfort, gaining keyless entry, a 10.25-inch digital dial display and a larger eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You also get plenty of extra style, such as more eye-catching 16-inch alloy wheels and a range of contrasting paint and roof colours.

SE L – from £19,930

SE L extends the SE Comfort trim, gaining a large 9.2-inch touchscreen with enhanced connected services and satellite navigation, along with 16-inch alloy wheels, chrome window trim surround, cruise control with a speed limiter and dual-zone climate control.

Monte Carlo – from £21,125

The top-spec Monte Carlo brings extra sportiness to the Fabia line-up, bringing larger 17-inch alloy wheels, sports styling and a range of gloss black styling elements. Inside, there’s a digital instrument cluster, range of red styling elements and aluminium pedals.

What about personalisation?

There’s plenty of opportunity to add extra style to the Skoda Fabia, with nine colour options on offer, including brighter shades like Velvet Red, Phoenix Orange and Race Blue. You can also upgrade the alloy wheels to up to 18 inches in size. You can choose to have the roof and mirrors painted in black or grey (depending on spec), too.

More conventional optional extras you might want to consider include the Winter Package, which brings cruise control, heated front seats and climate control, and a parking pack that brings a reversing camera and wireless smartphone mirroring.
