Buyers guide to the BMW X2

Buyers guide to the BMW X2

The BMW X2 is CarKeys SUV of the Year for 2018. If you're in the market for one, then here's what you need to know…

Our SUV of the Year is a car that creates a new niche – the Sports Activity Coupe, which brings together the character and spirit of a hot hatch with the kerbside appeal and chunky good looks of an SUV. In addition, there are also 4x4 models to further its SUV credibility.

But as with all new cars, the range of models and choices can be a confusing minefield, so we’ve broken it down for you into the four different trim levels and engines on offer.

Trim levels

SE

The SE is the least sporting X2, aimed at those who want a more comfortable ride and less of a hot hatch style interior.

It still comes with quite a bit of standard equipment, though, with Sat Nav featuring real-time traffic updates, a 6.5-inch central touchscreen, climate control, electric tailgate, LED daytime running lights, heated washer jets, auto light and wipers, parking sensors, hill descent control, cruise control and hill start assist.

Sport

Next up is the Sport, with 18-inch alloys, LED headlights, gloss black dashboard details, shadow black exterior details and sports seats with contrasting cladding, on top of the standard SE kit.

M Sport

The next model up is the M Sport, which plays on the famous BMW M brand to bring in even more sporty features, such as sports suspension and M Sport sill covers and steering wheel. Heated front seats with cloth and Alcantara, 19-inch alloys and a unique M Sport grille complete the package, along with sporting anthracite coloured headlining.

M Sport X

The M Sport X gets full leather, aluminium interior details, a specific M Sport X body kit and unique 19-inch alloys.

Options

There are also a number of option packs available – namely…

Vision

Reversing camera and electrically folding mirrors.

Comfort

Electric front seats and heated steering wheel.

Sport Plus

Harman-Kardon stereo, 19-inch alloys, tinted glass and additional lighting.

Tech

Wi-fi hotspot, BMW Navigation Plus, Head-up display and Bluetooth with wireless charging.

Engines

Right now, there's a choice of four engines on offer:

sDrive20i

The SDrive 20i is the entry-level petrol unit, developing 192bhp and in two-wheel-drive format. That’s enough to accelerate from 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds, with power delivered via a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission.

sDrive18d

With 150bhp on tap, the sDrive18d is the introductory diesel unit and can do 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds, with a choice of six-speed manual or sports automatic transmission. It offers up to 61.8mpg.

xDrive18d

The engine in the xDrive18d models is the same as the sDrive18d, but with four-wheel-drive and a choice of six-speed manual transmission only. It’s marginally quicker form 0-60 than the two-wheel-drive models, but the trade off is a slight drop in fuel economy.

xDrive20d

Top of the tree is the 190bhp XDrive20d, which comes with Sport Automatic transmission only. It does 0-60mph in 7.7 seconds, can achieve up to 60.1mpg and is four-wheel-drive. It’s available on Sport, M Sport and M Sport X models only.
