2016 BMW 7 Series details arrive

First details and images of the next-generation BMW 7 Series luxury saloon have been officially revealed, ahead of its launch in dealerships this November. Pricing starts from £63,750.

Rivalling the Mercedes S-Class and Audi A8 saloons, the new BMW 7 Series is more luxurious and more efficient than ever before.

The exterior design is largely reminiscent of its predecessor, with the most noticeable difference being the new laser-based headlamps, called ‘Laserlight’, which debuted on the BMW i8 sports car.

Like its predecessor, the next 7 Series is offered with both regular and long wheelbases. The cheapest long wheelbase 7 Series is priced from £67,700. Even with the regular wheelbase, the base of the car has stretched by 26mm to create a more spacious cabin for passengers. Although it’s larger than before, the 2016 7 Series is actually 130kg lighter than before, benefiting handling and efficiency.

From launch, the engines include a 265bhp six-cylinder diesel for the entry-level 730D and a 326bhp 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol for the 740LI model priced from £72,060.

Next year a plug-in hybrid version of the 7 Series, called the 740e will join the range. Combining a four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor, it produces 322bhp in total, records a claimed fuel economy of 134mpg and emits just 119g/km in CO2.

There are two trim levels for the 2016 7 Series, with M Sport sitting above the standard version. For all models, standard kit now includes a new infotainment system, which has a touchscreen for the first time.

Also featured is sat-nav, four-zone climate control, active massaging seats, wi-fi browsing and a removable seven-inch tablet. A 3D sensor in the 7 Series allows you alter numerous in-car functions with gesture control.
