BMW has released images of the testing of its upcoming luxury coupe, the 8 Series, at the Aprilia high-speed proving ground in Italy.

The coupe provides the base for the M8 GTE racing car that is due to be officially unveiled later this year, while the road model goes through its final stages of testing before it also gets revealed.

Using the Italian testing facility, BMW has been able to test the prototype on the 4km high-speed bowl and the internal karting track to refine it before its release.

Still in near-complete camouflage, major detailing is visible, and it is clear the model will combine the classic kidney grille at the front end along with sleek top lines and a short back end with little overhang.

Although reports are unconfirmed, BMW is expected to reveal the production version of the 8 Series Coupe at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show this March.

Klaus Fröhlich, head of research and development at BMW, said: “The test drives under the most severe conditions show that we are right on target with our concept for the new BMW 8 Series Coupe.

“The vehicle dynamics values already achieved are absolutely impressive. Our customers and fans can look forward to a genuine sports car.”

The testing of the M version of the 8 Series is also well underway, with the production model likely to be displayed later this year.

The M8 GTE will be racing throughout the World Endurance Championship season and will debut at the Daytona 24-hour race this weekend.
