Following on from the reveal of the fourth generation A-Class hatchback, Mercedes has taken the covers off the saloon variant at the 2018 Auto China show in Beijing.
This is the first sedan version of the brand’s smallest model, which was unveiled in the L body type – a model suited solely for the Chinese market – but will come in its standard size to the European market later this year.
It comes with the same MBUX infotainment system as the hatchback that uses artificial intelligence for speech recognition and is also fitted with many of the safety systems found on the S-Class saloon, such as lane keep assist and speed limit assist.
Although details for the European market model are yet to be released, it is expected that the saloon will come with the same trim levels and engine options as the hatchback. That means customers will get the choice of SE, Sport and AMG Line specifications, and three engine options – a 1.5-litre diesel and two petrol units in the shape of a 1.4-litre and a 2.0-litre.
The design of the saloon is reminiscent of the hatchback version as it has the same front end and bonnet shape, but it has a new rear shape with a smooth top line onto the boot to accommodate the extended body.

The interior design is as it would be in the hatchback and with that you get the option of fitting a dual-screen infotainment display system along the top of the dashboard, premium materials for the trim and air conditioning.
Prices are yet to be confirmed for the A-Class Saloon, but expect them to be close the hatchback’s £25,800 starting price. Deliveries are due to begin in the third quarter of this year.
