The head of A-Class powertrain development confirmed the premium hatchback is likely to have hybrid and all-electric options at some point.

The latest version of the A-Class is likely to come with electrified powertrain options at some point in its lifespan, according to one of the model’s chief developers.

Oliver Ebelsheiser, head of powertrain development for the new hatchback, confirmed that it will come with some form of battery propulsion in the near-future.

Ebelheiser said: “We have announced that we will have electrical vehicles in each and every platform in the future. This includes the new compact car platform, meaning it will have an electrified variant.”

Ebelhesier also said that Mercedes is looking at both hybrid and all-electric options, although the engine-supplemented option is more likely than the pure battery-powered alternative.

He added: “We are thinking about both, but hybrid definitely makes sense as there are rivals out there with hybrids in that vehicle range. We will have the same.”

With hybrid options currently available across the Mercedes range in the shape of the C-, E- and S-Class models, Daimler also offers the Smart ForTwo and ForFour with all-electric versions – but is looking to add even more across the range in the coming years.

Prices for the upcoming A-Class start from £25,800 – with deliveries beginning in May.
