Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the newest edition of its A-Class premium hatchback for the first time tonight in Amsterdam.

The fourth generation car has an ultra-modern look, with a sleek exterior design and a futuristic interior, all of which is part of the marque’s new design language – which it calls ‘Sensual Purity’.

Standout features include intelligent drive semi-autonomous features, dual infotainment displays and intelligent voice control.

Intelligent drive consists of active distance assist, which helps adjust the car’s speed at bends and roundabouts, as well as active emergency stop assist and active lane change assist.

The free-standing infotainment screens are available in three options – two seven-inch displays, one seven-inch and one 10.25-inch display or two 10.25-inch displays.

Intelligent voice control is a virtual intelligence interface that can be activated using the phrase: ‘Hey, Mercedes’.’ This is the first time this new system has featured on one of Mercedes’ cars and it has a number of functions, such as destination input, phone calls, music selection, messaging, weather forecasting and climate control.

The new A-Class will be available with three different engines - a 1.4-litre petrol unit, producing 161bhp and 250Nm of torque, which can be paired with a seven speed dual-clutch or six-speed manual gearbox.

A bigger 2.0-litre petrol powertrain is also available, with 221bhp, 350Nm of torque and only the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Finally, there’s a 1.5-litre diesel engine, putting out 114bhp and 260Nm of torque. This unit is also only available with the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

The new A-Class has had its forged aluminium suspension system upgraded for an improved ride, while 16-inch alloy wheels come as standard. Another feature that’s included with all models is adaptive braking, which improves safety and comfort, especially in wet conditions.

Pricing is yet to be announced, but the A-Class is available in four trim levels. Style is the most basic option, with 16-inch alloy wheels and an artificial leather interior.

Progressive adds a few more features, such as 17-inch alloy wheels. AMG-Line brings in sporty body styling and 18-inch alloys. The top-spec Night Package adds a number of different aesthetic tweaks, such as tinted glass and a gloss black grille.
