2019 Audi SQ5 TDI revealed

Performance SUV is back with diesel power.

Audi has reintroduced the high-performance SQ5 SUV, but this time with a diesel powertrain.

Originally launched in 2017 with a 3.0-litre petrol V6 engine, more stringent WLTP regulations meant Audi has to go back to the drawing board with the SQ5.

But the result is arguably a car better than ever before, boasting an impressive 342bhp and 700Nm of torque from its 3.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine. That power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed tiptronic automatic gearbox, with the result 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds and an electronically limited 155mph top speed. Aiding efficiency is a 48v battery pack to make this a mild-hybrid powertrain, which kicks in to reduce fuel consumption when coasting or idling.

The SQ5 continues to look understated as a performance machine, with only the trained eye able to spot if from a regular Q5. There are visual cues to identify it though — including revised bumpers, an aluminium front grille and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Standard equipment for the SQ5 TDI includes an 8.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation, Nappa leather sports seats, LED lights and Audi’s Virtual Cockpit technology in place of traditional dials and gauges.

Prices have yet to be revealed, but deliveries are expected to begin in the Spring so that news shouldn’t be too far off.
