A fifth of men 'in love with their cars'

In the run up to Valentine’s Day, couples around the world will be planning big days for their partners, but girls might be facing some tough competition from four-wheeled rivals.

According to a new survey conducted by car trading site Autovolo, nearly a fifth of British men said that they’re as in love with their car as they are with their life partner.

The survey collated data from 2,000 British drivers, with an overwhelming 78 per cent of the respondents saying that they had some sort of an emotional connection with their car.

Stuart Askey, Autovolo’s director, said: “For some people that emotional attachment stems from them having experienced a significant life event in their car.

“Some said they had shared a first kiss in their car, others used it as their wedding vehicle or went on the road trip of a lifetime with it, but we also had owners admitting to having conceived a child in their car or even given birth to one!”

Are you overly attached to your car?

Of those surveyed, 64 per cent considered their motor to be as much a part of the family as a sibling, spouse or pet, while nearly four in ten said that they’d given their car a proper name.

The majority of women tended to see their car as being masculine, giving them names like Charlie and Freddie, while most men see their cars as having a female personality instead.

It’s bound to cause a few arguments amongst couples, but the study also found that 71 per cent of women said their male partner spent too much time with their car. while only eight per cent of men said the same.

Mr Askey said: “A car is a major investment for families, second only to buying a house in a vast majority of cases, and people naturally tend to care about something that cost them a lot of money.

“But as our research highlighted, an overwhelming number of Brits have taken it to the next level and have a deeper connection with their car, not only seeing it as means to go from A to B, but actually considering it a member of their family, as they do their pet.”
