Abarth devises world-first virtual reality test drives

The initiative means potential buyers can still experience an Abarth while showrooms are shut

Abarth has launched the world’s first virtual reality first drive that allows prospective customers to try out one of the brand’s hot hatches from their homes.

Introduced at a time when showrooms across the UK are still closed and test drives are not permitted, the scheme aims to ensure people can still experience an Abarth, even within current restrictions.

How the ‘test drives’ work is that an Abarth expert will deliver a crate to a potential customer, which contains the VR headset pre-loaded with footage of the cars driving, Bose speakers and other Abarth merchandise.

The headset includes a voiceover and instructions from Abarth owner and influencer Stef Villaverde, along with footage of the brand’s new 595 Scorpioneoro driving through some of the UK’s best driving roads.

Originally being trialled at Vospers Abarth, Exeter, if the scheme proves successful, the Italian firm aims to roll it out further.

Arnaud Leclerc, managing director of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles UK, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer this innovative test drive approach to our customers and Abarth fans. This VR experience allows customers to enjoy the thrill of driving a 595, but from the safety of their own homes.”

The 595 Scorpioneoro is the brand’s latest special model, and is limited to just 2,000 examples globally. Coming with black paint, 17-inch gold alloy wheels and a host of other gold accents, the model pays homage to the classic A112 Abarth ‘Targa Oro’.

It’s powered by a 163bhp 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which allows for a 0-60mph time of 7.1 seconds and a top speed of 135mph. It’s on sale now with prices starting from £22,595.
