All you need to know about Ford’s Motability Car Scheme

The Motability Scheme allows people with reduced or restricted mobility to get behind the wheel of some good, subsidised vehicles. Here’s what Ford has to offer.

To help drivers with less mobility than most, the Motability scheme was set up in 1977 to allow those eligible to get their hands on a funded car with affordable weekly costs.

Drivers are allowed to apply for Motability if they receive either the higher rate mobility component of the current Disabled Living Allowance, or the War Pensioner’s Mobility Supplement.

If you fit that criteria, here are the Ford models that you can get behind the wheel of under Motability…

Are performance models available?

Unfortunately, neither the Fiesta or Focus options are available in the respective ST and RS variants, with Ford offering more everyday models.

How much does it cost?

Depending on the model you choose, prices can range from £53.71 per week for the Ka+ Studio up to the full total weekly allowance for many of vehicles available – which is currently £59.75 per week.

2017 Ford Fiesta

What does the weekly cost get me?

Each payment covers the vehicle’s road tax, insurance, servicing, roadside assistance and the option to nominate additional drivers – which comes in useful if you’re unable to drive the vehicle itself. On this contract, you keep the vehicle for three years with a 60,000-mile allowance over that time.

A deposit is required before the contract begins, which ranges from £95 on the Fiesta, up to £3,745 for the Mondeo Hatchback in ST-Line trim. Ka+ models don’t require a deposit.

Can modifications be made?

Under request from the driver, special adaptions can be made to ensure that operating the vehicle is easier. Ford recommends that you visit a Driving Assessment Centre before to see what additional equipment you may need to operate the vehicle, such as driving aids and adaptions, a way of getting in and out of the vehicle safely and the ability to stow additional equipment.
