In contrast to the current car market, alternatively-powered vehicle sales have increased by almost 24 per cent compared to this time last year.
January saw 9,020 sales in the electrified vehicle segment, which is 1,741 more than in the first month of 2017.

This has led to an increased market presence with alternatively-fuelled models now making up 5.5 per cent of the units sold so far this year.
Petrol-powered cars also saw an increase in sales, with 95,892 sold in January compared to 88,380 at the same time last year – leading to increase of 8 per cent in the market share.
Both of these segments bucked the trend of the overall market, which saw a 6.3 per cent drop in overall sales due to people moving away from diesel-fuelled vehicles – which saw a 25.6 decrease in units sold.
SUV models had a good month, as the segment now has its largest market share yet due to 6.6 per cent sales increase last month.
Ford has also started the year as it means to go on, as the Fiesta tops the January sales charts with 8,335 unit sales. This is almost double compared to its sector and market rival, the Volkswagen Golf, which was second on the list with 4,310 models shifted.
The Focus was third (4,105 sales), followed by the Nissan Qashqai (3,851) and Vauxhall’s Mokka X (3,767).
