Audi adds entry-level diesel engine to A7 line-up

A new lower-powered diesel engine – badged 45 TDI – is the latest addition to the high A7 Sportback range.

Audi has broadened the appeal of its luxury four-door A7 coupe, with the introduction of a new entry-level diesel engine.

The engine is a 3.0-litre V6 diesel unit, which will be badged as the ’45 TDI’ under Audi’s recent naming strategy. It’s paired with an eight-speed tiptronic automatic gearbox.

The engine has been widely used across Audi’s models, and is a lower powered version of the 283bhp 50 TDI. It produces 228bhp and 500Nm of torque, allowing for a 0-60mph time of 6.3 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. It’s only half a second slower to accelerate to 60bhp than the 50 TDI, despite having over 50bhp less.

As with all A7 engines, this new unit uses a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to increase fuel economy, in this case allowing for average fuel economy figures of 50.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 147g/km – the same as the 50 TDI. This system essentially allows the engine to switch off between speeds of 34mph and 99mph for the car to coast while freewheeling.

Standard equipment is excellent on the A7 Sportback with entry-level Sport trim models coming with 19-inch alloy wheels, satellite navigation, a rear-view camera, a Virtual Cockpit, lane departure warning and front and rear LED lights.

S-Line models add 20-inch wheels, sports suspension and a sportier bodykit, as well as Matrix LED headlights.

The new entry-level option means that A7 prices now start from £52,240, and S-Line models from £55,140 – roughly £3,000 less than the more powerful 50 TDI engine. The 45 TDI is available to order now.
