Audi RS 1 reportedly planned for 2017

Audi is believed to be working on a new range-topping performance version of its A1 supermini called the RS 1, which will go on sale next year.

According to a recent report by Autocar, Audi bosses have given the go-ahead to make the RS 1 effectively serve as a swansong before the A1 gets replaced by a second-generation model in 2018.

Currently, the hottest version of the Audi A1 is the range-topping S1 which offers 228bhp from a 2.0-litre TFSI turbocharged petrol engine. It’s believed the RS 1 will use a similar engine but with the output increased to around 280bhp.

The Audi S1 only uses a six-speed manual gearbox and this will likely be used by the RS 1 as well. However, the new car could also use a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic ‘box as well.

The use of more aggressive-looking bodywork including chunkier bumpers and a larger, more aerodynamic spoiler is also likely. Expect the 0-62mph sprint time of the RS 1 to be well below six seconds.

Audi has made an A1 specification more powerful than the S1 before, which was called the A1 Quattro. But that was a left-hand drive only car and only 19 were sold in Britain back in 2012. It’s believed though that the RS 1 will be a regular production model that’ll come in right-hand drive.

Like the S1, the Audi RS 1 will reportedly come in three-door and five-door Sportback bodystyles. While the S1 currently starts at £25,600, the RS 1 is likely to start from nearly £30,000 for the three-door version.
