Audi to expand Q range with two all-new SUVs

Audi’s line-up of SUVs is set to grow as the German manufacturer has announced plans to put the new Q4 and Q8 into production over the next two years.

The Q8, which was revealed in concept form earlier this year, will represent Audi’s new flagship SUV and will be built at the manufacturer’s plant in Bratislava, Slovakia alongside the Q7 from 2018.

Featuring a large, coupe-esque body shell, the Q8 will rival the likes of the BMW X6 and Mercedes GLE coupe SUVs when it debuts. Promising ample headroom despite the sloping roofline, the Q8 will likely offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain as featured on the concept model.

The Q8 concept was powered by a 3.0-litre TFSI petrol engine and an electric motor, developing 438bhp combined and up to 700Nm of torque. An eight-speed automatic gearbox and Quattro four-wheel drive also featured.

The Audi Q4 meanwhile is a smaller crossover SUV which will be based on the Q3 and will sit between the Q3 and Q5 in Audi’s product line-up. Like the Q8, it will have a more couple-like profile than any of Audi’s current SUV models on the market.

Expected to rival the likes of the BMW X4 and Mercedes GLC coupe, the upcoming Q4 will start production in Gyor, Hungary from 2019.

Engines for the upcoming Q4 are likely to include 2.0-litre petrol and diesel units similar to those found in the current Audi Q3.

Pricing for the Audi Q4 could start from around £30,000, while the flagship Audi Q8 will likely start from around £55,000.
