Not content to just make vehicles for the road, Audi has unveiled a new prototype moon buggy called the Lunar Quattro, which is scheduled to land on the moon next year.

Built in conjunction with the team from Part-Time Scientists, the moon rover features the latest in Audi’s cutting-edge technology like e-tron electric power and autonomous driving capabilities.

Of course, being an Audi, it’s also fitted with quattro all-wheel drive to help it better cope with the harsh terrain of the lunar surface, and it also comes fitted with a 360-degree video camera.

Power for its battery packs come from an integrated solar panel system while top speed clocks in at an estimated 2.2mph. Not exactly R8 fast, but it is a research tool after all.

Developed by 16 of Audi’s engineers, the Lunar Quattro is currently undergoing final tests in the Middle East, before blasting off on a five-day, 380,000-mile journey to the moon’s surface.

It’s due to touch down towards the end of next year, and will land near to the site of the lunar rover left by the 1972 Apollo 17 mission, which it’s expected to snap some photos of.
