Bentley celebrates centenary with new all-electric concept

The dramatic EXP 100 GT is a fully-autonomous luxury concept car.

Bentley has unveiled a new electric car on the day of its 100th anniversary as the British manufacturer looks ahead at its future.

The dramatic-looking EXP 100 GT is an electric concept capable of being fully-autonomous and utilises a new platform.

It looks towards what a grand tourer (GT) car might look like in 2035, whereby the driver can either remain at the helm of the vehicle, or let the car do all the work.

The car’s self-driving system is said to be able to tell when a spirited drive is needed, or a more relaxing journey, for example.

Bentley is making a big deal about its need for sustainability, with the EXP 100 GT using materials such as 5,000-year-old copper-infused riverwood, organic materials, wool carpets and cotton interior trim.

Its looks are undoubtedly bold, with the concept featuring an enormous front grille, which is said to be inspired by the iconic Bentley Blower. Further cues are also taken from the R-Type Continental.

Longer than the current Mulsanne saloon, the concept is 5.8m long and 2.4m wide, with the front doors measuring an enormous 2m.

Powering the EXP 100 GT is an electric powertrain that has a motor on each wheel. Bentley claims a 0-60mph time of 2.5 seconds would be possible, along with a top speed of 186mph.

But one of the most impressive things about this concept is the range, with Bentley predicting 435 miles on a single charge. The Crewe-based manufacturer is also saying the car could be charged from 0 to 80 per cent in as little as 15 minutes, if infrastructure allowed for it.

Adrian Hallmark, chairman and chief executive of Bentley, said: “Today, on our Centenary, we demonstrate our vision of the future of our marque, with the Bentley EXP 100 GT. This is a modern and definitive Grand Tourer designed to demonstrate that the future of luxury mobility is as inspirational and aspirational as the last 100 years.”
