BMW 4 Series Concept previews new 4 Series at Frankfurt Motor Show

The Concept 4 is set to be the inspiration for the next generation 4 Series.

BMW has taken the covers off the Concept 4 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Expected to be the inspiration for the next generation 4 Series, the Concept 4 comes with a more dynamic look, while borrowing details from other recent BMW design studies.

The large grille is taken from the current 7 Series and X7, while the narrow lights and slim wing mirrors add a sharper and sportier aesthetic.

BMW says the Concept 4 takes inspiration from classic models, such as the 328 and 3.0 CSL, although some of the features seen here – such as coverless LED lights and slim-line wing mirrors – are unlikely to be seen on the production 4 Series.

Domagoj Dukec, head of BMW Design, said: “The kidney grille has always been a signature feature of BMW cars. The BMW Concept 4 presents a confident and classy take on this iconic feature. At the same time, the BMW Concept 4 offers a look ahead to the expressive face of the 4 Series range.”

As the coupe version of the 3 Series, the upcoming 4 Series is likely to come with largely the same interior as its saloon sibling. It’s also likely the powertrains will be the same, so expect the production 4 Series to be offered with a plug-in hybrid option from launch.
