BMW 4 Series facelifted for 2017

BMW has revealed a facelift for its first-generation 4 Series range, which will appear in the metal this march at Geneva.

BMW has revealed a facelift for its 4 Series range, which will be presented to the public at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show this March.

These are the first major changes introduced for the BMW 4 Series since the car made its debut a few years ago. Still available in two-door coupe and convertible forms as well as in four-door Gran Coupe form, the facelifted 4 Series range is set to launch during this spring.

Pricing starts at £32,525 (£680 more than prior to the facelift) for the coupe and Gran Coupe, while the convertible starts at £37,315.

Subtle design updates

Styling changes for the 4 Series facelift include new LED headlights, redesigned 18 and 19-inch alloy wheels, plus lower bumpers and restyled air ducts for the Luxury and M Sport trim models. There are also two new exterior paint jobs available, which are called Sunset Orange and Snapper Rocks Blue.

Interior changes are subtle but do include a redesigned steering wheel and more choices for dashboard trim finishes, with chrome elements and high-gloss black panels among the possibilities. The interior updates are similar to those introduced for the 3 Series in 2016. The sat-nav in the 4 Series has also been updated with a new interface.

Engine choices virtually the same

Having already introduced new powertrains last year, there are no major changes in this regard for the 4 Series as part of its facelift. Options include a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit delivering 181bhp for the 420i specification or 248bhp for the 430i. There’s also a turbocharged 3.0-litre petrol boasting 321bhp for the 440i.

Diesel engines include a 2.0-litre unit with 187bhp for the 420d and a 221bhp version of the same engine for the 425d. There’s also a 3.0-litre turbodiesel that produces 254bhp for the 430d or 309bhp for the four-wheel driven 435d xDrive. The 4 Series Gran Coupe is also available with a 418d spec with a 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel.

The most frugal engine in the line-up is the 420d which officially returns up to 70.6mpg combined and CO2 emissions of 106g/km.

The performance-focused M4, available for the coupe and convertible, also receives the same design changes as the rest of the facelifted 4 Series range.
