BMW 8 Series Convertible revealed

After the coupe returned to the market earlier this year, the Convertible is the follow-up in the flagship’s range.

BMW has taken the covers off the second model in the 8 Series range – the 8 Series Convertible.

As the second version of the flagship model to be unveiled this year, the 8 Series Convertible provides a luxurious open-top experience for four people and comes with sporty underpinnings.

With soft folding roof able to open and close in 15 seconds at speeds up to 31mph, the elegant cruiser comes with the same design cues as the coupe – including the sharp front and rear bumpers, as well as an extended rear deck.

BMW developed the Convertible alongside the Coupe, M8 and M8 GTE racecar, so it possesses a stiff body and chassis setup with unique bracing and special occupant measures in case of the vehicle rolling – such as a strengthened windscreen frame and rollover bars that use an explosive charge to deploy.

As with the Coupe, the Convertible comes with the 850i and 840d engine options – both of which are paired to an eight-speed sports automatic transmission and the xDrive all-wheel drive system.

Adaptive M suspension and integral active steering both come as standard.

With the roof taking up space in the rear section, the boot space is 350 litres and it comes with an automatic boot lid with hands-free opening and closing.

It also comes with a series of safety assistance systems and two 10.25-inch displays in the cockpit that run the BMW Operating System 7.0 and ‘Hey, BMW’ voice-activated personal assistant.

Prices are yet to be announced, but expect there to be a small jump in price over the Coupe. The 8 Series Convertible will make its market debut from March 2019.
