BMW announces new engine option for X5 and X6 SUVs

A new mild-hybrid xDrive40d diesel option extends the appeal to these large SUVs

BMW has announced a new engine option for two of its largest SUVs – the xDrive40d.

Available on the X5 and X6 models, the new engine option combines a 3.0-litre straight-six diesel engine together with a 48-volt starter generator to allow for a mild-hybrid system. It produces 335bhp and an impressive 700Nm of torque, which comes paired to an eight-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox sending its power to all four wheels.

The electrical assistance can also offer 11bhp on-demand, which means that both the X5 and X6 can sprint from 0-60mph in 5.3 seconds.

As well as improved performance, the mild-hybrid system also aids with efficiency and ride comfort – helping to cut CO2 emissions down to 153g/km.

The new option slots into the SUVs’ ranges between the xDrive30d and the powerful M50d engine option – bolstering these impressive 4x4s further.

This unit could become the most powerful diesel variant of the X5 and X6, though, with the top-tier M50d engine rumoured to be getting the axe as it’s said to be too complicated and expensive to produce, according to Motor1.

Prices for the new engine options are yet to be announced, though expect further information ahead of the powertrain being introduced in May 2020.
