BMW is updating its 1 Series hatchback and 2 Series coupe and convertible ranges with changes including new range-topping models.

More powerful and efficient M models

The new M140i replaces the M135i in the 1 Series line-up and the M240i replaces the M235i for the 2 Series. Compared to their predecessors, the new models have new, more powerful engines and extra equipment.

The M140i and M240i use a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine producing 335bhp, that’s 14bhp more than offered by the outgoing range-toppers for the 1 and 2 Series.

As a result, the new M140i is three tenths of a second quicker covering the 0-62mph sprint than the M135i. The M140i and M240i coupe cover the 0-62mph sprint in 4.6 seconds when using the eight-speed automatic gearbox instead of the standard manual 'box, while the 240i convertible takes 4.7 seconds.

These new range-topping models are also more efficient than their predecessors, thanks in part to the use of stop-start engine technology and brake energy recovery technology. The M140i and M240i coupe both officially average 36.2mpg and emit 179g/km of CO2, while the M240i convertible records 34mpg and emits 189g/km of CO2.

Other engine updates plus new kit

Other changes for the 1 Series hatchback and 2 Series coupe and convertible include power boosts for other existing specifications.

The four-cylinder petrol engines used for the 1 and 2 Series’ 20i, 25i and 30i specifications get an extra 7bhp, meaning they now develop 181bhp, 221bhp and 249bhp respectively. CO2 emissions are also reduced by up to 17g/km.

Other changes include an eight-speed automatic gearbox for the 125i and twin tailpipes for the 120i and 220i. The 228i has also been renamed as the 230i.

Equipment updates include the latest iDrive interface, which debuted on the latest 7 Series and is now available for both the 1 Series and 2 Series, as well as the 3 Series, 4 Series, X5 and X6. Black M Sport leather trim now also becomes optional for the 1, 2, 3 and 4 Series.

Pricing for the updated 1 Series range starts at 23,980 for the 120i, rising all the way to £31,875 for the new M140i. Pricing for the 2 Series models range from £26,865 for the 220i coupe to £35,090 for the M240i coupe. The M240i convertible starts from £38,535.
