BMW has previewed its next range-topping car with the Concept M8 Gran Coupe, which is set to head into production in 2019.
Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, it’s based on last year’s 8 Series concept and retains largely the same look —two extra doors aside — although more aggressive styling features have been added to distinguish this as an M model.
These include a more aggressive front fascia with large air intakes, bonnet contours, an increase in the size of the ducktail spoiler, quad exhaust pipes and a lower ride height to create a more brash stance.
There’s also changes to the materials used in some parts of the car, including the addition a carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic roof — a trademark of the M division’s recent creations — in an effort to reduce the car’s overall centre of gravity.
Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice-president of BMW Group Design, said:
"The BMW 8 Series will take over as the new flagship model of the BMW line-up and, as such, combines unsurpassed sportiness and elegance.
"The BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe offers a look ahead to the most exotic and alluring variant of the new BMW 8 Series."
The new BMW 8 Series is set to go into production in 2019, with a high-performance M model available around the same time as the standard car. Pricing hasn’t been confirmed, although expect an M8 Gran Coupe to compete with the likes of Aston Martin’s V8 DB11.
