BMW replaces iDrive system with new Cockpit system

The BMW Cockpit has officially unveiled before it debuts at the Paris Motor Show in the new 8 Series, Z4, X5 and 2019 3 Series.

BMW has officially revealed its new infotainment – BMW Cockpit – which comes in as a replacement for the iDrive system.

The Cockpit setup uses BMW’s latest 7.0 operating system, which offers fully digital displays for the instrument panel and infotainment screen, which uses the new Intelligent Personal Assistant system.

The voice-activated system can be initiated by saying “Hey BMW” and can then adapt the car’s settings. It can also be personalised to make it feel more custom-made to the driver by giving it a specific name.

The iDrive was introduced back in 2001 and was a ground-breaking development for in-car entertainment, and the new Cockpit setup will be another step up in vehicle controls.

With the Live Cockpit equipment options, BMW offers three finishes – with the Plus and Professional options fitted to higher quality models. The system updates are performed wirelessly, with the software upgrade taking 20 minutes – at which time the car needs to be stationary and in range of a Wi-Fi hotspot.

BMW will be applying the system and displaying it for the first time on the 8 Series, Z4, X5 and 2019 3 Series at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, which starts on October 2.
