Having revealed the M340i earlier this week, BMW has taken the covers off yet another 3 Series variant – this time it’s the 330e plug-in hybrid.
Fitted with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine that is paired to an electric motor, the 330e is capable of going 37 miles on all-electric power while also being more powerful than the previous iteration.
The electric range is doubled over the previous generation 3 Series plug-in and also comes with improved fuel efficiency (138mpg) and reduced emissions – a quoted 39g/km CO2.
The petrol engine and electric motor combine to develop 249bhp and 420Nm of torque, which means the 330e can sprint from 0-60mph in 5.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 143mph. The 330e is also fitted with the XtraBoost system, which adds a further 40bhp to the output.
It can reach 68mph in all-electric mode, which is 18mph faster than the previous 330e. The engine is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission which comes with brake downshifts.
Despite the addition of the electric power system, there’s 375 litres of boot space that can be extended by folding the 40:20:40 split seats flat.
Customers are able to choose from the SE, Sport Line and M Sport trims for their 330e, which will go on sale in July 2019. Pricing will be confirmed closer to the release date.
