The three electric prototypes have been put through their paces in Sweden before going on sale in the next few years.

BMW i has been testing three of its upcoming EVs in the Arctic Circle before each of their launches in the next few years.

The iNext, iX3 and i4 have been put through their paces in Arjeplog, Sweden, where many manufacturers take their vehicles prototypes to see how they can cope in colder conditions.

With the testing taking place on frozen lakes, snow and in temperatures well below zero, BMW has had a chance to see how the electrical system and power units of the vehicles cope in a more extreme climate.

Already confirmed to go on sale next year, the iX3 will debut the fifth generation of BMW’s eDrive technology, with BMW claiming a range of more than 249 miles and the possibility to use DC charging stations with a capacity of 150 kWh for rapid replenishment of the battery pack.

The i4, which is set to go into production in 2021, is expected to have a range in excess of 373 miles from a single charge and is also claimed to be able to go from 0-60mph in under four seconds and reach speeds over 124mph – with the coupe going up against the likes of the Tesla Model S.

Also set to go into production in 2021, the iNext will come with level 3 autonomous driving functions – so the car can do more of the driving on its own – and, like the i4, is set to have a range over 373 miles.
