BP buys out Chargemaster — the UK’s largest EV charging network

Buyout by British fuel giant will see electric specialists rebranded as BP Chargemaster

British fuel giant BP has announced a takeover of the UK’s largest car charging infrastructure supplier — Chargemaster.

The takeover will see the electric infrastructure specialists rebranded as BP Chargemaster within the next year, while a good number of BP’s 1,200 filling stations across the UK will see charging points installed.

Chargemaster was founded in 2008 and currently has over 6,500 charging points in the country as part of its POLAR network — which is set to substantially rise as the industry accelerates towards electrification.

BP also aims to roll out an ‘ultra-fast’ charging infrastructure — which will see the introduction of 150kW chargers capable of delivering 100 miles of range in 10 minutes.

Tufan Erginbilgic, chief executive of BP Downstream, said:

“At BP we believe that fast and convenient charging is critical to support the successful adoption of electric vehicles.

“Combining BP’s and Chargemaster’s complementary expertise, experience and assets is an important step towards offering fast and ultra-fast charging at BP sites across the UK and to BP becoming the leading provider of energy to low carbon vehicles, on the road or at home.”
