Though it might have taken BMW several years to launch its second-generation electric cars, it’s now quickly expanding its range of EVs.
There has been the recent arrival of the iX3 as BMW’s first electric SUV, while the new iX will soon launch as the brand’s technological flagship. Another model arriving imminently is the i4 – BMW’s first electric saloon car, and one that’s expected to prove especially popular.
Offering a sporty driving experience, modern interior and strong performance, it’s a worthy rival to the Tesla Model 3. Here’s what you need to know about it.
What powertrains are available?
While BMW may expand its powertrain options in the future, for the time being there are two options – eDrive40 and the top-spec M50 version.
Let’s begin with the eDrive40, which features an electric motor producing 335bhp, with all power being sent to the rear wheels. BMW claims this can accelerate to 60mph in 5.5 secondsand reach a top speed of 118mph. A usable 80.7kWh battery also features, which BMW says allows for an impressive 367 miles between charges – more than that of the Long Range Tesla Model 3.
At the other end of the spectrum is the M50 – the first electric model that BMW’s ‘M’ division has worked on. With twin electric motors enabling all-wheel-drive, it puts out a huge 537bhp, which means the i4 can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 3.7 seconds and hit a top speed limited to 140mph. It again uses the 80.7kWh battery, though has a slightly smaller range at 316 miles.
Both versions can charge at up to 200kW, which means that just 10 minutes of charging could allow for more than 100 miles of range.
What trim levels are offered?
Three trim levels are available on the BMW i4 – Sport, M Sport and the M50. Equipment highlights and prices are as follows.
Sport – from £51,905
The i4 gets a long list of equipment as standard, including LED front and rear lights, an electric boot, sports seats and BMW’s ‘Curved Display’ that merges a large touchscreen and digital dial display. You also get cruise control, a reversing camera and the choice of either 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels.
M Sport – from £53,405
If you want something a little more stylish you should choose the M Sport, which brings 18-inch M alloy wheels, Black Alcantara upholstery and more aggressive styling.
M50 – from £63,905
At the top of the range is the M50. You’re mainly paying for the more powerful motor, though M50 versions do get more appealing Cerium Grey styling detail, additional gloss black elements and larger 19-inch alloy wheels to round off the performance look. It also boasts adaptive M suspension, performance brakes and variable sports steering.
What about personalisation?
BMW offers plenty of choice when it comes to optioning an i4, with a great range of colours available – including bolder shades like Sunset Orange and Sanremo Green. Various alloy wheel designs are also on offer.
Inside, you can choose a full leather interior for £1,500, with either red, black or beige upholstery colours on offer. A full suite of option packs can also be had, with the Visibility Pack (£1,500) bringing Laserlight headlights and high beam assist, and a Comfort Plus Pack (£1,950) contributing keyless entry, a heated steering wheel and electric front seats.
