Citroen C5 X revealed as new flagship hatchback with SUV cues

The stylish new model promises maximum comfort and offers plug-in hybrid power

Citroen is rejoining the large car segment with its dramatic-looking new C5 X, which aims to combine a saloon, estate car and SUV in one.

Influenced by the C-Xperience concept car, it sees a return of the C5 nameplate, which was last used in 2015 in the UK on a large saloon and estate model. The striking model gets a cool front end that utilises a chrome grille running into LED running lights, while gets plastic body cladding and a raised seating position that helps to give it more of an SUV-like stance, along with large 19-inch alloy wheels.

Citroen is promising class-leading comfort thanks to its Advanced Comfort suspension setup being fitted, along with a very roomy interior. The firm claims plenty of room for adults to sit in the rear, along with a large 545-litre boot, which increases to 1,640 litres with the rear seats folded.

Inside, the new C5 X features a new 12-inch touchscreen system, which is said to be ‘heavily influenced by the latest tablet technology’, and brings natural voice recognition, wireless smartphone mirroring and new Cloud-based services. A large head-up display will also be offered, while being equipped with a range of driver assistance technology – including highway assist and a 360-degree surround camera system.

The new C5 X will also be available with the same plug-in hybrid powertrain as the C5 Aircross, which combines with a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined 222bhp. It’s capable of 31 miles on electricity, though full efficiency and performance figures are yet to be announced. A more conventional petrol engine is expected to be offered too.

Full pricing and specifications will be announced closer to the Citroen C5 X going on sale from late 2021.
