Company cars are an important job perk, says young workers

A recent survey has found that the majority of workers under the age of 25 see a company car as one of the most appealing and important employment benefits.

The survey was commissioned by Skoda who questioned 1,500 drivers of all ages about company cars. Nearly two-thirds of those respondents aged between 17 and 24 said having a company car as an employment perk that would be of interest.

33 per cent of those in the same age group said they would be more inclined to accept a job offer if they were to be provided with a car. More than a quarter pinpointed having a company car as being the most appealing job perk a company could offer.

The survey found that young workers generally view access to a company car in work as more desirable than medical insurance, a mobile phone and regular training.

Nearly two-thirds of the survey’s respondents said they would be more likely to stay in a job if they were provided with a company car. Men placed greater importance on access to a company car than women did, with 68 per cent of men saying they would accept a job offer if it included a car, compared to 58 per cent of women.

The Head of Fleet at Skoda UK, Henry Williams, said: “Our research shows company cars are very appealing to workers of all ages, but particularly young people. We see this trend strongly outside of London, where many companies are based at out-of-town locations – making a car essential for the daily commute.”
