Could an all-new BMW X8 M be on the way?

A trademark name suggests a new BMW SUV might be on the cards

Many thought that the large X7 would be the flagship BMW SUV, though that doesn’t appear to be the case any longer.

That’s because an even bigger sporty SUV could be on the way after BMW filed trademarks for a new ‘X8 M’ nameplate. The firm has been filing patents for the ‘X8’ name since 2016, though all had had gone quiet on the likelihood of a larger model going into production.

However, with this new trademark being filed, it suggests this large luxury SUV could be on the way, along with a sporty ‘M’ derivative. This hot model would likely share the same 616bhp 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 with models such as the X5 and X6 M Competition versions.

With the X7 already being a worthy flagship – thanks to its imposing size and luxury – the X8 could take things up another level, potentially rivalling even more premium brands’ models. That means the likes of the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

According to Auto Express, the likelihood of an X8 is “under serious discussion” within BMW, though this new trademark means that the model could be closer to production than first anticipated.

Should it materialise, which is rumoured to happen in 2022, it’s likely to take the form of a coupe-like version of the X7, and could be a four-seater to emphasise its luxury credentials.
