Based on the pinnacle of the AMG GT range, only 750 of the soft-top units will be built and develop 576bhp

To add further diversity to the AMG GT range, Mercedes has unveiled a soft-top version to the sports car line-up.

Called the AMG GT R Roadster, the model is limited to just 750 units and comes with the same powertrain as the coupe version that was released back in 2016.

That means a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 developing 576bhp and 700Nm of torque sits under the bonnet, allowing the Roadster to get from 0-60mph in 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 197mph.

The design of the AMG GT R Roadster is much the same as its hard-top sibling, including the AMG Panamerica grille, LED headlights and daytime running lights, emphasised air intakes at the front and a wing at the rear.

But the big difference is the removal of the carbon fibre roof, which has been replaced by a triple-layer soft folding roof to fit in with the rest of the GT Roadster models.

The soft-top Roadster also comes with the same driver aids as the coupe, such as the carbon fibre adaptive aerodynamic elements under the body and active rear steering.

Tobias Moers, Mercedes-AMG chairman, said: “The new AMG GT R Roadster is far more than the combination of the thrilling vehicle dynamics of the GT R with the special flair of our GT Roadsters.

“It is the essence of two worlds, blending to deliver our brand pledge, ‘Driving Performance’, in a very special way. With our GT R Roadster, we have without doubt once again developed a brand-defining sports car. It too embodies Mercedes-AMG in form, function and vehicle dynamics and enriches our GT family with a highly exclusive variant limited to 750 units.”

It is expected the GT R Roadster will be displayed at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, which opens to the public on March 7.
