Cupra Leon scores top marks in latest Euro NCAP safety tests

The hot hatchback shares the same top rating as the Seat Leon

Euro NCAP has announced its latest round of crash testing results, with the Cupra Leon hot hatch receiving the top five-star rating.

The new model – which gains sportier looks and powertrains compared to the Seat Leon it’s based on – gets the top five-star rating that is shared with its non-performance siblings. It scored impressively in all categories: Adult Occupant (91 per cent), Child Occupant (88 per cent), Vulnerable Road Users (71 per cent) and Safety Assist (80 per cent). All models are also equipped with autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition and traffic jam assist.

The Leon joins Cupra’s bespoke Formentor in receiving top marks from Euro NCAP.

Elsewhere in the latest round of tests, the Vauxhall Mokka received four stars, with the lower rating accounting for its autonomous emergency braking system being unable to pick up cyclists, while also lacking a central airbag. Euro NCAP’s secretary general Michiel van Ratingen said that the Mokka ‘lacked some critical safety systems that have become increasingly commonplace by now’.

Additional testing also happened on the latest Mercedes GLA crossover and its electric EQA equivalent, with both receiving five stars, and sharing the top rating as the Mercedes B-Class they’re based on.

Volkswagen’s new Tiguan eHybrid also shares the same five-star marks as its non plug-in sibling model.
