Does this concept hint that a new MG sports car is on the way?

The new MG Cyberster is a sleek electric sports car concept

MG is a brand that has its origins set in the sports car world, with models including the MG Midget, MGB and TF all proving legendary for this manufacturer.

Since being owned by Chinese automotive firm SAIC, the manufacturer has produced more sensible everyday models – including the MG3 supermini, as well as the ZS and HS crossovers.

But could a new MG sports car be in the pipeline? Well, it’s unknown but the firm has just shared renders of an electric sports car, which is known as the Cyberster.

Just like its past drop-tops, it looks to be a small two-door sports car, and features bold styling cues – most notably with the front and rear lights, as well as the design detail that runs down the centre of the bonnet.

Few details have been revealed with the images that have been shown by SAIC Design, so it’s unknown as to whether a physical concept car will follow, and whether the brand intends to produce an electric sports car. What we do know is that the rendered model features 5G connectivity technology and Level 3 autonomous driving functionality.

However, it’s not the first time MG has shown intent to produce an electric sports car. Back in 2017, the firm showed off a striking two-door electric coupe – known as the E-motion – at the Shanghai Motor Show. While the model was set to be shown in production form in 2020, no further details have been shared about the model since.
