Drivers should pass motorway test before getting licence, survey says

Citroen and IAM RoadSmart found that almost two-thirds of those asked would want new drivers to pass a motorway test as part of the full test.

More than 60 per cent of British drivers believe that learners should pass a motorway-based test as well as a normal driving test before being given their full licence, according to a survey.

Conducted by Citroen and IAM RoadSmart, the survey asked the 1,032 IAM RoadSmart members whether they thought a motorway section should be included in the full test – with the results revealed on the same day learner drivers are allowed to take lessons on motorways.

Those lessons must be conducted in dual-control vehicles with an approved driving instructor in the car.

This change to driving lessons follows on from the alterations made to the driving test back in December 2017, and now allows learner drivers to develop skills in joining moving traffic, leaving motorways and overtaking – as well as promote safer driving.

However, it is up to the instructor as to whether their student goes on the motorway.

Neil Greig, IAM RoadSmart director of policy and research, said: “IAM RoadSmart strongly welcomes this common-sense change to the law on motorway driving.

“It has never made sense to us that new drivers on our most important roads learned how to use them by trial and potentially fatal error. The government’s insistence on the use of approved instructors and dual-controlled cars is a welcome safeguard that will ensure consistent levels of training and a proper phased introduction to motorway driving skills.”

Soaud Wrixen, Citroen UK managing director, added: “Citroën is a brand that understands the importance of educating new drivers, and ensuring they develop the essential skills needed to get behind the wheel of a car.

“The Citroën C3 supermini was recently voted ‘Driving Instructor Car of the Year’ in the FirstCar Awards 2018, which reinforces our dedication to delivering an exceptional experience for all our customers – whether you’re an approved driving instructor or you’ve only just passed your test.”
