Electric Mercedes EQE range grows with sporty new AMG model

The EQE 53 4Matic+ brings up to 678bhp

Mercedes has unveiled a sporty new AMG version of its new electric EQE – the 53 4Matic+.

The EQE is the latest in Mercedes’ EV line-up, and intends to be the electric equivalent of the brand’s well-known E-Class. Though the standard EQE is yet to reach showrooms, Mercedes has already showcased sportier AMG versions.

While other markets will get a more affordable ‘43’ AMG model, in the UK it’s only the flagship EQE53 4Matic+ model that will be offered. Featuring bespoke electric motors with improved cooling, the ‘standard’ car produced 617bhp and 950Nm of torque, though buyers can choose an ‘AMG Dynamic Plus Package’ that takes the performance figures up to a staggering 677bhp and 1,000Nm of torque.

Putting it in direct competition with the Audi RS e-tron GT and Porsche Taycan Turbo S, this EQE is able to reach 0-60mph in just 3.1 seconds with the optional package (it’s 0.2 seconds slower without it) and reach a claimed top speed of 149mph.

It also packs a large 90.6kWh battery, which offers a claimed range of between 276 and 322 miles. It can also be charged at up to 170kW, which Mercedes says allows 112 miles of range to be added in just 15 minutes.

The EQE 53 also features four driving modes; Slippery, Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus, while the optional performance package provides a Race Start mode for those wanting to launch their cars on track. Mercedes has also engineered a ‘unique sound experience’ into the EV to add to extra drama to the acceleration. Rear axle steering is included too, making it easy to drive around town while improving handling stability at higher speeds.

It also features a bespoke adaptive air suspension setup with strengthened anti-roll bars, while all versions come equipped with Michelin tyres designed specifically for sporty electric models.

To set the model apart from the regular EQE, it comes with AMG-specific styling and bespoke lights, along with a range of gloss black detailing. The interior is also filled with Artico leather and microfibre, along with contrasting red stitching.

Pricing for the new Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 is yet to be announced, though the models are expected to reach showrooms later in the year.
