Every Volvo to have electric power by 2019

Volvo are moving away from selling cars with just a petrol or diesel engine as the company confirms that every new model from 2019 and beyond will feature electric power.

Every new Volvo car launched from 2019 onwards will be a hybrid or fully-electric model.

Such a move will make Volvo the first major manufacturer to ditch cars with conventional engines only in favour of such a product range.

Earlier this year, the president of CEO of Volvo, Hakan Samuelsson, said that Volvo would release its first fully electric car by 2019, while its first fully autonomous car should be ready 2021.

It has now been revealed that five new electric cars are set to be launched by Volvo between 2019 and 2021.

Samuelsson has said that the five electric will be “supplemented by a range of petrol and diesel plug in hybrid and mild hybrid 48-volt options on all models.” He added: “This means that there will in future be no Volvo cars without an electric motor.”

Existing Volvo cars sold purely with an internal combustion engine will be phased out over time, but the Swedish manufacturer has not given a time frame for when this process will be completed.

These latest announcements follow the news last month that Volvo’s Polestar sub-brand would produce only fully-electric performance cars in the future. Two of the five electric cars set to launch between 2019 and 2021 are expected to wear the Polestar badge.
