Facelifted 2015 Mercedes A-Class revealed

Mercedes has revamped its A-Class hatchback for 2015, complete with a subtle exterior facelift, extra features and a new high-performance AMG model.

As standard, the new A-Class now comes with a slightly tweaked exterior, which features a reshaped front bumper and Mercedes’ diamond front grille, while LED headlamps are an optional extra. Other new additions to its appearance include a revised set of tail lights and a new rear bumper, which incorporates integrated exhaust pipes at the back.

Inside, Mercedes has kitted out its entry-level model with an upgraded eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which supports both Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink features. Buyers can now also choose from a wider range of colours and materials for both the exterior and the cabin, alongside upgraded seats and a choice of new Sahara Beige or black leather upholstery.

In a bid to improve comfort, Mercedes has also added a new adaptive damping system called Dynamic Select, which allows drivers to switch between four driving modes. These modes – Comfort, Sport, Eco and Individual – tweak the car’s setup at the touch of a button to improve comfort, handling or fuel efficiency, while Individual allows drivers to personalise the ride.

Rounding off the interior additions is the same dual instrument display as the CLA and GLA models, plus safety features which include emergency braking assist and a drowsiness detection system.

Under the bonnet, buyers can pick from a choice of three diesel and two petrol four-cylinder engines in the standard A-Class range, with the entry-level 1.8-litre diesel delivering the best economy. Able to deliver up to 80.7mpg with CO2 emissions of just 89g/km, this engine makes for the most efficient A-Class model yet, while the 2.2-litre diesel has been boosted from 168bhp to 175bhp.

Sitting at the top of the range is a choice of two new AMG-badged models, the A250 AMG or the new A45 AMG, which claims to be the most powerful production hatchback ever. Hammering its closest rival, the Audi RS3, by a full 19bhp, the A45 AMG produces a massive 376bhp from a 2.0-litre petrol engine and as a result can cover the 0-62mph sprint in just 4.2 seconds.

Other highlights on the AMG range includes standard four-wheel drive, shorter gear ratios for the standard seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, plus an AMG-exclusive front spoiler and rear diffuser.

Finally, buyers can order a special Formula 1-inspired Motorsport Edition, which includes a petrol green finish to mimic Mercedes’ F1 cars, along with upgraded seats and upholstery.

Pricing for the range has yet to be released, but the revised Mercedes A-Class will be available to order from July 3, with first deliveries due this September.
