Facelifted Toyota GT86 to debut in New York

Toyota has released images and details of its facelifted GT86 sports car, which will make its public debut later this week at the New York motor show. Updates for the GT86 include tweaks to the exterior and interior design and adjustments to the suspension.

Styling tweaks

The styling changes to the Toyota GT86’s exterior include a larger front grille, a restyled front bumper and a new look for the fog light surrounds. Also new are the LED headlamps and the design for the alloy wheels.

Inside meanwhile, the revised GT86 feathers leather upholstery and Alcantara trim around the seats and door trim, plus contrasting silver stitching. Toyota has also installed a new steering wheel, which has integrated controls for the stereo and sports a central ‘86’ logo.

Ride adjustments

Besides all the styling tweaks, Toyota also says the updated GT86 will be better to drive than before thanks to a tweaked suspension set-up. The adjustments are said to have improved ride comfort while also reducing the car’s body lean through the corners, boosting agility in the process.

However, one thing that hasn’t been changed by Toyota is the GT86’s power output. The coupe will continue to use the same Subaru-developed flat-four Boxer petrol engine with 197bhp. The GT86 also retains a rear-wheel drive set-up and its six-speed manual and six-speed automatic gearboxes.

Very little difference is likely to occur to the performance figures for the GT86, which currently covers the 0-62mph sprint in 7.6 seconds with the manual gearbox or 8.2 with the auto.

The Toyota GT86 is currently priced from £22,495 and pricing will likely start at a similar figure when the facelifted model launches in the UK later this year.
