Feast your eyes on the limited edition Mazda MX-5 Icon

The 2016 Mazda MX-5 Icon is a new limited-edition and by golly, the MX-5 is possibly even more gorgeous than ever.

Mazda has unveiled a new special edition version of the latest MX-5 roadster ahead of this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Mazda MX-5 Icon.

Keen fans of the MX-5 will know it's actually the fourth model to wear an Icon badge, with two special edition Icon versions of the MkII in 2002 and 2005, and a MkIII version following in 2007.

As with the previous versions the Icon is an aesthetic enhancement more than anything, but it looks downright naughty in a choice of either grey or white finishes with contrasting metallic red parts.

Unique contrasting paintwork

Based on the SE-L Nav trim, the Icon also gets 16-inch Gunmetal alloy wheels and an equipment list including black leather seats, rear parking sensors and automatic lights and wipers.

However, the special edition MX-5 is only available with the 129bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine and is limited to only 600 examples in the UK.

Jeremy Thomson, Mazda UK’s managing director, said: “With over 120,000 sales since its launch in 1990, the UK has played a huge part in the MX-5 success story and the Icon follows a long tradition of special edition MX-5s that allow customers to have a stand out vehicle which is truly affordable.”

Hard-top MX-5 later this year

Later this year, Mazda will also put a new hard-top version of the MX-5 on sale in the UK, with a retractable Targa-style metal roof that can be folded in and out at speeds of up to 6mph.

It’s expected that the MX-5 RF will be the best-selling version of the MX-5 when it arrives here in the UK, given that the last generation hardtop MX-5 accounted for nearly 80 per cent of total sales.

Prices for the hardtop MX-5 have yet to be revealed, but the new Mazda MX-5 Icon special edition is available to pre-order now, priced from £20,995.
