Fiat 124 Spider could offer hardtop coupe variant

Fiat is reportedly working on a fixed-roof coupe version of its 124 Spider, and it could be revealed to the public next year.

According to a report from Autocar, the coupe version of the 124 would likely be a high-performance model, which means it may only wear the badge of Fiat’s performance sub-brand, Abarth. The Fiat 124 Spider is based on the same platform as the current Mazda MX-5, and both cars have started off as soft-top convertibles only.

A coupe version of Fiat’s 124 is a somewhat similar idea to Mazda’s upcoming MX-5 RF, a new retractable hard-top version of the sports car. Whereas the MX-5 RF has a folding roof though, it’s believed the coupe version of the 124 will simply come with a fixed roof. It’s believed this decision has been made to better differentiate the Fiat and Mazda sports cars.

In regards to how the Fiat 124 will look with a fixed coupe roof, it could look a lot like the Abarth 124 rally car concept which was shown at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show back in March. While that car had a racing livery that’s bound to be absent from any production coupe, it did have a fixed metal roof.

The coupe version of the 124 will likely use the same 1.4-litre turbo petrol found in the Spider model. This unit in the Fiat sports car produces 138bhp as standard or 178bhp in the Abarth variant.

Depending on the choice of engine and branding, the coupe version of the 124 could be priced between £22,000 and £35,000.
