Fiat 500 gets new turbo diesel

Fiat has opened orders for its new turbo diesel variant of its 500 city car, which joins three petrol variants in the 500 range.

Updates to the Fiat 500 back in September last year brought with it design tweaks and efficiency improvements, with a promise of a new diesel being added to the range later on. That time has come as order books for the the new 1.3-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel open.

Producing 95bhp and a surprisingly potent 200Nm of torque at just 1,500rpm, the new turbo diesel can reach the 62mph mark from a standing start in just 10.7 seconds and can go on to a top speed of 112mph.

As well as offering rather impressive performance figures, the new diesel also emits just 89g/km of CO2 emissions, meaning its road tax free, and claims to return an average of 83mpg.

The starting price of the Fiat 500 is £10,890, however, prices for the new diesel model start from £14,166 for the hardtop and £16,815 for the 500C soft top. Also, the new diesel is only available in Pop Star and Lounge trim grades.

Other available engines

The 1.3-litre turbo diesel joins a trio of petrol engines. The entry-level choice is a 1.2-litre unit, producing 69bhp.

The other petrol choices are variants of the famed 0.9-litre, two-cylinder TwinAir turbo. Available with either 84bhp or 104bhp, the TwinAir is well-suited to those who want a small powertrain for traversing city streets.

Although it has just two-cylinders, the TwinAir actually boasts the quickest 0-62mph sprint time of the 500 range at just 10 seconds.
