First ever Ford Mondeo Hybrid Estate announced for 2019

The estate model will be fitted with a petrol-electric powertrain and will go on sale at some point in 2019.

Ford has announced that it will be adding a hybrid powertrain to the Mondeo Estate range in 2019.

The practical model will be fitted with the petrol-electric system, which develops 185bhp when fitted to the Mondeo saloon.

The setup is a 2.0-litre petrol engine paired to an electric generator connected to a 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which can be replenished by regenerative braking – with the car capable of driving in all-electric mode. The powertrain is paired to a continuously variable automatic transmission.

Although it comes with a quoted fuel efficiency rating of 58.9mpg, a Mondeo hybrid was able to achieve 123mpg over an 80-mile route as part of the Layer Marney Cup in Essex – showing that the model can be incredibly frugal.

Roelant de Waard, Ford vice president for European marketing, sales and service, said: “For many customers the practicality offered by an estate body style is an absolute must, so we’re excited to announce that from next year those drivers will also be able to reduce their fuel bills using the sophisticated petrol-electric powertrain of our new Mondeo hybrid estate.

“Electrified powertrains will continue to play a key role in our European product line-up. Ford is investing $11 billion (£8.4bn) and plans to deliver 16 fully electric vehicles within a global portfolio of 40 electrified vehicles by 2022.”

Ford will announce full specification and details closer to the on-sale date next year.
